COUNCIL OF FRIENDSHIP AND SOCIETIES AND CULTURAL ENLIGHTENING RELATIONS WITH FOREIGN COUNTRIES OF UZBEKISTAN
The main goal of our policy is to get on the world arena in order primly to place in the line of developed countries: to establish the competitive bilateral cooperation in the field of economical, cultural, scientific, commercial and other spheres; that to visual demonstration of Uzbekistan and it's rich past, culture to the world and the processes of changes which are taking place in our country.

Uzbekistan 's friendly and cultural and educational links, based on people's diplomacy, are of along term history. In the 20's of the XXth century Central Asian branch of the society for cultural relations with foreign countries was set up in Tashkent . In 1947 and 1953 some changes were introduced into the name of this institution. First it was named "The Uzbekistan Branch" and later on "The Society of Uzbekistan".
In 1958 "The Society of Friendship and Cultural Relations of Uzbekistan with Foreign Countries" was set up. It united the Societies and Associations of Friendship existing in the country. Having united more than 900 industrial enterprises, Higher and secondary specialized educational institutions, research institutes and collective farms, the society became an influential public institution.
Independence as well as fundamental changes in all spheres of our life in the Republic required further development of friendly and cultural and educational relations and raising them to a higher level. As a result May 20, 1997 became the date of establishing the Council of the Societies of Friendship and Cultural and Enlightening Relations of Uzbekistan with Foreign Countries. It was May 26, 1997 when the Decree of the President of Uzbekistan "About the measures to support the Council of the Societies of Friendship and Cultural and Enlightening relations of Uzbekistan with Foreign Countries" was issued. The Decree was of great significance in the matters of defining and implementing the tasks facing the Council.
The Council's Tasks
The main tasks of the Council are all-round development of friendly and cultural and enlightening relations with foreign countries in the spirit of the times, widespread popularization of the achievements in different spheres of life of Independent Uzbekistan in foreign countries, first-hand acquaintance of the public of other countries with great history, culture, literature and arts of our people, the more effective use of the potentialities of "people's diplomacy". At present one of the significant tasks facing the Council is to show the world public that Uzbekistan is an independent, democratic state to be treated as an equal partner in cultural, scientific and humane spheres; to establish and develop cultural and enlightening relations in cooperation with the UNO, the UNESCO and other international institutions.
" Uzbekistan " journal is the Council's social and scientific press. The Council engages in self-finance with help of Uzbekistan Republic 's law about the guarantee of actions of non-profit and non-social organizations.
The Frame-work of the Council
The Council includes the Presidents of the Societies of Friendship. The general Assembly of the Council Members is the highest Body of the Council. One of the Presidents of the Societies is elected President of the Council on a voluntary basis for a term of four years. The Council activities on the permanent basis is carried out by the Secretariat.
The Composition of the Council Secretariat:
Vice-President of the Council, the Leader of the Secretariat;
The Department of working with compatriots;
The Department of working with Friendship Societies;
The Department of the problems of organization and international institutions;
The Department of Information and Press;
Regional branches of the Council;
Relations with Foreign Countries
Year after year the relations of the Council and International Institutions are becoming closer. Permanent relations on the basis of partnership have been established and agreements on cooperation have been signed with govermental and non-governmental institutions such as a branch of "RosZarubezhCentre" in Uzbekistan, the Bulgarian "Federation of Friendship with the Russian Federation and the peoples of the CIS countries", associations "Fukushima-Uzbekistan", "Turkistan-America", "Congress of Bukharian Jews of the USA and Canada", associations "Uzbekistan-Japan", "Japan the countries of Euroasia", "The Bell of the Peace", "The Society of Friendship of China with foreign countries". The result of the cooperation with the above-mentioned institutions is the permanent exchange of delegations; meetings, quizzes, exhibitions, conferences and seminars.
As a result of the Council activities and the societies established under its auspices the Society of Friendship with our republic were set up in countries as Russia, the UK, Germany, Bulgaria, Egypt, Malaysia, China, Pakistan, Greece, Japan, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Kirghizsatan.
Relationship with Compatriots
About 6 millions of our compatriots live in 30 countries of the world. Interaction with compatriots is a special sphere of the Council activities. The Council considers one of the most important tasks to maintain close contacts with the compatriots abroad, to render all-round assistance in preservation of memory of the fore-father's land, of the mother tongue, culture and history; to enrich and develop the notion of Uzbekistan through the compatriots in the countries where they live.
